Amit Shah is Minister of Home Affairs in the Narendra Modi government (October 2019). He is generally regarded as Narendra Modi's right hand man. He is a former ABVP leader and BJP Home Minister in the Gujarat government.

Shah was forced to resign as Gujarat Home minister in 2010 after his arrest on charges of having ordered a series of encounter killings. In particular he faced charges of murder, and being the head of an extortion syndicate, although after the BJP came to power in 2014 various cases against Shah were dropped. Shah also directed the illegal surveillance of a young woman in late 2009, in the so-called "snoopgate scandal".
