Keshav Baliram Hedgewar (1889-1940) was the founder of the
RSS and its first sarsangchalak (supreme leader). He founded the RSS following a visit to
V. D. Savarkar, and gave it its modern organisational form with shakhas (local branches), each managed by a pracharak ("preacher") dedicated to the organisation, and populated by swayamsevaks ("volunteers") to spread the message of
Hindutva.
