Babu Bajrangi is the alias of Babubhai Patel, a former Bajrang Dal leader, and central figure in the Gujarat violence of 2002. He subsequently joined the Shiv Sena. In 2012 he was convicted, along with Maya Kodnani and 30 others for his role in the Naroda Patiya massacre. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. In March 2019 he was granted bail on medical grounds.
In a hidden camera interview Bajrangi described his elation while killing and said he was ready to die for Hindutva. He also said that Narendra Modi was a hero for whom he was ready to die, that the violence was carried out with Modi's blessing, and that Modi subverted the legal process to save him.
